ABC - ART BELGE CONTEMPORAIN, du 9 octobre au 31 décembre 2010 au Frenoy (Nord-Pas-de-Calais)

"(…) Proximité et évidence aveuglent : la France méconnaît relativement la richesse,
la diversité et l'actuelle agitation artistique chez l'un de nos plus proches voisins.
Et pourtant, pour la région Nord l'exposition ABC - Art Belge Contemporain, il s'agit
d'une véritable fraternité, d'une perméabilité culturelle qui paradoxalement n'a pas
effacé les frontières, telles que les artistes américains, allemands et même japonais
par exemple l'ont fait à la faveur des modes et du marché de l'art. A bien des égards,
la Belgique a marqué vivement toutes les disciplines artistiques actuelles : danse,
théâtre, arts plastiques, y compris en inventant des formes qui mêlent ces disciplines.
Des amateurs et des collectionneurs de Belgique ont été essentiels pour accompagner
cette effervescence contemporaine.
ABC est une exposition qui ne prétend pas faire un point exhaustif de la diversité
de la scène belge contemporaine. Les disciplines plus particulièrement enseignées
et pratiquées au Fresnoy ont constitué un critère prioritaire de sélection :
photographie, cinéma, vidéo, installation, performance, chorégraphie. Et ce sont
les domaines où précisément la Belgique s'est récemment distinguée, puisant au sein
d'un héritage marqué par le cinéma documentaire consacré aux autres arts - et dont
l’oeuvre de Jef Cornelis continue d’entretenir l’héritage -, par le cinéma expérimental
(son festival légendaire de Knokke-le-Zoute), par une tradition anarcho-dadaïste
spécifique et enfin tout simplement, par la poésie des attitudes "hors limites"
donnant lieu par le passé à de spectaculaires provocations."

the diversity and the current creative agitation of some of our closest neighbours.
However, for the Northern region, with the ABC exhibition of Belgian contemporary
art, there is real fraternity, a cultural permeability which, paradoxically, has not
erased the borders in the way that, for example, American, German and even
Japanese artists have done in favour of fashion and the art market. In many respects,
Belgium has made an impact on all the current artistic disciplines: dance, theatre
and the visual arts including the invented forms where these practices merge.
Collectors and amateurs in Belgium have been essential in accompanying this
contemporary effervescence.''
ABC is an exhibition that does not claim to be a comprehensive portrayal
of the diversity of the contemporary scene in Belgium. The disciplines most
particularly taught and practiced at Le Fresnoy have formed the criteria of priority
for selection purposes: photography, film,video, installation, performance and
choreography. And these are the exact areas where Belgium has recently been
excelling, drawing from its inheritance of documentary film devoted to other
disciplines - in this the work of Jef Cornelis continues to maintain the tradition, -
through experimental film (with his legendary festival in Knokke-le-Zoute) in
a specific anarcho-dadaist tradition and finally quite simply with poetry of
"beyond-the-limit" attitudes which, in the past, gave rise to spectacular provocations.''
